The seaside resort of Maspalomas can be found at the extreme southern tip of the Spanish island of Gran Canaria. The Playa del Ingles beach also belongs to the territory of Maspalomas. Maspalomas is surrounded by dunes and the Atlantic Ocean. Gran Canaria airport is approximately 30 km away. When the Canary Islands were conquered by Spain in the fifteenth century, the archipelago mainly served as a trading post. Gran Canaria in particular became an important port for Spanish merchant ships. As shipping innovated, the island's role became more and more that of a tourist resort. Rich Europeans increasingly sought out the sun here for a few weeks or months. After the Second World War, this development gained momentum. This led, among other things, to the foundation of Maspalomas in 1964. Due to its location on the south coast of the island, this Spanish seaside resort has become the most popular destination on Gran Canaria and one of the most famous destinations of the Canary archipelago in the following years.

You don't have to go to Maspalomas for cultural attractions, but there are some other nice trips to make. This way you can imagine yourself in the Sahara for a day. East of Maspalomas you will find about 400 hectares of spectacular sand dunes. These dunes, declared a national park, can only be visited on foot or on the back of a camel. So you can make a trip as if you were staying a few hundred kilometers east, on the African continent.

You can easily visit the rest of Gran Canaria from Maspalomas. The rugged interior with impressive volcanic rocks, caves and valleys are in themselves an attraction to drive through. Less common, but certainly recommended, is a day at sea. Rent a boat in Maspalomas and go out on the Atlantic for a bit. With a bit of luck you will see dolphins and other exotic fish swimming around here and there.
